Born and educated in Townsville, I majored in painting in 1989 after completing a Diploma of Fine Art at James Cook University.
I then went on to complete a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education through Monash University, which led to my teaching Art and English in both State and Catholic High Schools throughout Queensland.
I have always been interested in painting and have sold and exhibited in Townsville, Brisbane and Tasmania & in February 2014 at the Railway Carriage gallery at Pomona on the Sunshine Coast . I was successful in winning the $15,000 Kenilworth Art Prize for 2011, and after being a workshop tutor in September 2011 at Kenilworth Celebrates Art Week, have mentored several workshop in 2012 & 2013.
Most of my influence comes from the landscape and the environment around me and although I do use photos as a starting point on occasions, memories from my Queensland background and the strong light is always a constant. A visit to Europe (Le Louvre, Notre Dame, Monet's Garden etc) has introduced a new range of strong, bright colours into my work.
Whilst I wrestle with the works until I have achieved that quick glimpse, I enjoy the act of painting, especially the loose under painting at the beginning and then combine abstract mark making, colour, texture and design, keeping the layered image transparent and painterly. Sometimes my final work appears minimal, although it may have endured several processes.
I have been painting since I was very young and consider it to be a major part of my life. I also enjoy working with clay and found objects.
